Born on 13th February 1949, in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, England, my family emigrated to Australia in 1963 when I was 14. Whilst the rest of my family clung to their English heritage, I knew from the moment I arrived that Australia was where I belonged. I have always challenged being led by the nose and having to conform with other peoples ideals. I have an independent mind (which perhaps becomes more cynical with each passing year) and have always encouraged my children to follow the same path. The rebellious streak in the Australian character makes me feel completely at home.
I married Paulette in 1971 and we have two daughters Leticia and Samara. The women in my life are strong and independent thinkers and whilst on occasions I have felt incredibly outnumbered in the battle of the sexes, I am blessed to have them in my life.
We have lived for most of our married life in Ferntree Gully, Melbourne. At an early age I developed an interest in writing and like many people had the urge to someday write the novel we know is within us. I'm afraid that my novel has buried itself quite firmly and who knows if it will ever surface.. Whilst at school I aspired at one time to become a journalist. I look at the way mainstream journalism has evolved and thank heavens that I remained irresponsible for a few more years and let it pass me by. I worked for most of my life in the telecommunications industry achieving a reasonable level of mediocrity. My artistic and creative talents being put into hibernation with only brief appearances over the years in the area of cooking and brief dabble into the catering industry. Food is still a passion in it's preparation but more specifically in the devouring of it. Life begins at forty, or so the saying goes. At that time the topic of discussion among our circle of friends was the direction our lives had taken. What were the things we had always wanted to experience but had never got around to? Could we make a stand at this turning point in our lives and get out there and do them? My long subsided aspirations were to skydive and to act on stage. There were a few seconds before I leapt from a perfectly good plane that I rued those discussions. A phone call from a friend some time later, drew my attention to an advert in the classifieds. A local theatre company was looking to cast someone as the dentist son-in-law in "On Golden Pond". Desperation had obviously taken hold of the director as I was seized upon and thrust into the spotlights. From that day, theatre has completely taken over my life. However a video tape of my nervous role in "On Golden Pond" sits mocking me on the bookshelf, daring me to put it into the VCR and press play. I love to tread the boards. I love to feel the electricity, which emanates from a live audience. I never cease to be amazed at the charge, which runs through you as a roar of laughter springs from the audience from something you've said or done on stage. Through the years of experience on stage I get immense satisfaction from exploring a character and experimenting with the delivery of the lines to the best effect. The slightest change in delivery of a line can have the most profound effect on the audience response. One Act Plays are particularly popular around the local theatre scene but I felt there were too few good Australian plays from which to choose. The urge came to try my hand at writing and by doing so my life has taken yet another turn. Sherbrooke Theatre Company, with whom I have been involved for many years, has encouraged me along the way and I am eternally in their debt. Just about all of my plays have graced Sherbrooke's stage and the response has been most rewarding. I love to observe people on all levels and develop rich and multi-layered characters for my plays. My greatest reward is to hear people say how much they recognise people they know in my characters - even themselves. |
